Flying mainly from or to its hub in Budapest, Wizz Air has become an important low cost carrier in Europe. It serves a considerable number of cities in Europe and the Middle East. Although it is not Hungary’s flag carrier, it has the largest fleet for a Hungarian airline. In 2017 it announced that it would take over some of the timeslots that previously belonged to Monarch, establishing a new British division called Wizz Air UK. So if your flight cancellation or delay happened on a Wizz Air UK flight, this page also has you covered.


What do I need to claim compensation from Wizz Air for a delayed or cancelled flight?


In the same fashion as most airlines, Wizz Air will request proof that you held a booking to fly on the affected flight. The following documents will constitute as evidence:


  • Copy of your e-ticket or booking confirmation

  • Your booking reference number (generally shown in one of the documents abovementioned)


We can’t recommend enough that you keep a copy of your travel documents every time you go through a flight cancellation, delay or overbooking. Furthermore, if you’ve suffered a disruption while travelling with Wizz Air, you should always ask the crew about the reason for the delay. You do have the right to know and also, knowing the reason for your delay could easily speed up the process of claiming the compensation you are entitled to.


When am I able to claim compensation for a Wizz Air flight cancellation or delay?


Wizz Air operates most of its flights inside the European Union and therefore, most of said flights will be covered by the Regulation in place, we of course mean Regulation EC 261/2004. It is also a European carrier so even if you are departing from a non-EU city, but flying to the EU, your rights are protected. So you’ll be able to claim compensation if you’re flying with Wizz Air within, to and from the European Union.


When it comes to a delay, it is important that the total time of your delay, at the time of arriving at your final destination, was greater than 3 hours. Unfortunately, the Regulation does not cover a delay of less than 3 hours and therefore you are not entitled to compensation if this is the case. In the event of a cancellation, different rules apply. These can get complicated and confusing. So, generally speaking, if you’ve arrived at your destination with a delay greater than 2 hours (perhaps you took a replacement flight) or if you didn’t end up flying with the airline, you’ll be entitled to claim for compensation. However, if you were told about your cancellation 14 days in advance, or if your cancellation was a result of an extraordinary circumstance, unfortunately you won’t be eligible for compensation.

My Wizz Air flight was delayed, cancelled or overbooked. How much compensation can I get?


All flights under Regulation EC 261/2004 have a set amount of compensation (in Euros) depending on the distance they covered or were supposed to cover. In the case of a Wizz Air flight, it won’t be any different. So the total amount would be as follows:


  • £221.00* per passenger for a flight covering up to 1,500 kilometers;

  • For distances between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometers, the compensation due will be of £354.00* per passenger;

  • If your flight travelled upwards of 3,500 kilometers: you will receive £532.00* per passenger


* Please take into account that the total amount of compensation in GBP may vary depending on the exchange rate at the time of the compensation being paid.


Wizz Air denied me boarding, can I also claim for compensation?


Yes! Just like a Wizz Air flight delay or cancellation, you may be entitled to compensation if you were denied boarding. You will have to make sure that you being denied boarding was not your fault and that you arrived at the airport in time with all your travel documents in order, this includes your visas, passports, boarding passes, etc. You should also have been at the boarding gate on time. If you were denied boarding, don’t forget to ask for the reason for this. More often than not, flights are overbooked and some passengers have to be left behind. If this has happened to you, then you can claim for compensation! Don’t let the airline get away with it and exercise your passenger rights.
