There are different reasons why you’d find yourself asking for the money that you paid for your ticket back. Maybe because you don’t want to take that flight anymore or because the airline changed the schedule of the flight. If you’ve bought a fully refundable ticket, or if you have travel insurance, you probably will be able to get a refund for your ticket. However, there are other scenarios in which you can ask for a full refund.

Ticket refund and compensation when your flight has been cancelled

If your flight was cancelled and you’ve decided not fly, or a replacement flight was not offered to you, you might not only be entitled to compensation. You are also entitled to receive a full refund for the cost of the plane ticket that you didn’t use. You can always head over to our flight cancellations page to review when you are entitled to a cancelled flight compensation. But in short, and generally speaking, you may be entitled if the following conditions are met:

  • You were departing from a European city (disregarding the destination) or you were flying to a European City with a European carrier.

  • The airline did not inform you of the cancellation, or schedule change, 14 days before your departure date

  • The reason for the cancellation can’t be considered an extraordinary circumstance

If you’ve decided to take a replacement flight, you won’t be able to ask for a full refund but you can still claim for compensation if you arrived with more than a total delay of 2 hours. There are some exceptions that may come into play when the case consists of a cancelled flight, so if you’re not 100% sure if you are eligible for compensation, you can always use our free claim calculator and find out almost immediately:

If it’s still a little bit confusing, if the airline already rejected your case, or just completely ignored it; you can simply submit a claim with Yource and our team of claim specialists will go through all the information and assess your case. Do not worry, we’ll let you know about the validity of your claim and if it turns out that you are not entitled to compensation, we’ll let you know if you’re entitled to a refund.

What do I need to claim for compensation and ticket refund for my cancelled flight?

Just as it is with delayed flights, you will have to prove to the airline that you had purchased a ticket and held a reservation to fly on the cancelled flight. Most airlines will ask you to provide the following documents:

  • Copy of your Identification Document or Passport

  • Copy of your E-Ticket, reservation (PNR / Reservation number) or itinerary

  • Copy of your boarding pass

If you are getting refunded for your ticket, the airline will probably refund you the money directly to your bank account, if you paid by bank transfer. If you paid with a credit card, they will reinstate the money or cancel the transaction. If you wish to do so, you can submit your claim with Yource and we will be more than happy to also ask for the reimbursement of your original ticket for you.

Great service, I don't think I would have gone through all the hassle of submitting my own claim and following up on it.
